In this volume, the climb is made to Mount Takadake, the highest peak of Mount Aso, via the Sensuikyo Route (which later became impassable due to road collapses caused by the Kumamoto Earthquake, as of January 2017).
The ascent begins amid falling volcanic ash from the actively smoking Nakadake crater. As the weather deteriorates, the climb continues into rain clouds, and near the summit, the rain turns into white hail, accumulating on the ground as visibility rapidly worsens.
