The photographs were made by walking and photographing the neighborhood from late night through early morning. This work was selected for the 21st Hitotsubo Exhibition. This project represents the earliest phase of a series that would later continue as HOME (2007) and GOING HOME (2025)—a long-term practice of routinely walking through Tokyo’s suburban residential areas late at night and publishing the images online.

Even late at night, the entire dam site was brightly illuminated, with multiple massive cranes slowly transporting materials. The enormous concrete structure, emerging under artificial light, resembles a science-fiction film diorama, or a portal to another dimension—a world seemingly constructed in secrecy.

The ascent begins amid falling volcanic ash from the actively smoking Nakadake crater. As the weather deteriorates, the climb continues into rain clouds, and near the summit, the rain turns into white hail, accumulating on the ground as visibility rapidly worsens.

The artist undertook repeated nocturnal walks through suburban residential districts, systematically recording the Tama Hills and Tama New Town area. The images were originally disseminated through a personal website, accompanied by GPS logs displayed via Google Maps. The series was first exhibited at Guardian Garden, Tokyo, in 2006, and published as the artist’s debut photobook in 2007. The photographed participants were recruited via Twitter.

The photographs document the expressway network in western Tokyo, including the then newly opened Ken-O Expressway and the under-construction Shin-Tomei Expressway, as well as complex interchanges and junctions built along the foothills of the Kanto Mountains. Also depicted are trucks and trailers parked at service and parking areas, their drivers resting during the night.

Seen today, the cars featured here evoke a sense of nostalgia for that formative era.
